HANDWRITING ON THE WALL
A Message to Belshazzar
A new king named Belshazzar now ruled in Babylon. One day this king invited a thousand of his princes and nobles for a feast to honor his gods.
King Belshazzar and his guests were feasting, drinking wine, and having fun. Suddenly, they saw a man’s hand writing on the wall. Every eye was fixed on the mysterious fingers as they wrote words no one could understand.
By now the merrymaking had stopped. Deathly silence hung over the banquet hall. King Belshazzar’s face had turned white, and his knees shook in terror. “Bring the magicians and wise men!” he cried. “Whoever reads these words and tells me what they mean will get a great reward!”
The wise men promptly came to Belshazzar. But no one could tell him what the writing meant. Then the queen came to the king. “Don’t be frightened or upset,” she said. “In your kingdom is a man who was brought captive from Israel by your grandfather. His name is Daniel. The spirit of the holy gods is in him, and he can tell you what the words mean.”
King Belshazzar sent for Daniel. When he arrived, the king pointed to the words on the wall and said. “I have heard that you can solve all kinds of mysteries. If you can tell the meaning of those words, I will clothe you with purple robes, put a gold chain around your neck, and make you the third ruler of the kingdom.”
“Keep your gifts, or give them to someone else,” Daniel answered. “Yet I will tell you what the words mean. God hates the pride in your heart. You drank wine from the golden cups taken from His temple in Israel. You also praised the gods of silver, gold, wood, and stone.”
The king listened intently as Daniel boldly continued, “Because of this, God has sent this message: Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin. It means: God has ended your reign. You have failed the test. Your kingdom has been given to the Medes and the Persians.”
Daniel’s words proved true that very night. The Medes and Persians killed Belshazzar and took his kingdom.
