IN THE LIONS’ DEN
Daniel Stands the Test
Babylon was now part of the kingdom of Persia. By this time Daniel was an old man, having served his God for more than eighty years. He had received many special blessings from the Lord.
Darius, the Persian king, respected Daniel and made him chief of all the princes and governors. This made the other princes very jealous. They searched for some fault in Daniel’s life, but found nothing. He was faithful and honest. Finally they decided, “Our only chance is his religion!”
They went to the king and said, “All the rulers have agreed to make a law that for thirty days, no one shall ask anything of any god or man, except from you, O king. If anyone disobeys this law, he shall be thrown into the den of lions.” Darius fell for their scheme and signed the decree.
The new law did not change Daniel’s devotion to God. Three times each day he knelt before his open window. He prayed and thanked God just as he had done before.
The jealous princes spied on Daniel, then hurried to king Darius. They said, “There is a man who does not obey your law. That fellow Daniel is praying to God three times each day.”
Then the king was very sorry that he had signed such a decree, for he loved Daniel. He spent all day trying to find a way to excuse Daniel.
That evening the princes returned to the king. “You signed the law,” they reminded him, “and it cannot be changed!” At last the king ordered that Daniel should be cast into the lions’ den.
All that night while the king lay sleepless, the lions watched Daniel. But not one lion bit him. Early the next morning Darius hurried to the lions’ den. He called in anguish, “O Daniel, has your God saved you from the lions?” Then he heard a voice. It was Daniel’s!
Daniel said, “My God sent His angel to shut the lions’ mouths. I am not hurt at all, for I am innocent of wrong-doing.”
The king was overjoyed that Daniel’s God had saved him. He ordered that the princes who had accused Daniel should be thrown to the lions. The hungry lions destroyed each one of them.
