THREE FAITHFUL BOYS
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego
Because of their sins, many of the Israelites, also called Hebrews, were taken to Babylon as captives. During this time, Nebuchadnezzar the king made a huge statue of gold that looked like a man. Then he called all his princes, rulers, and judges together for a special meeting. Although Daniel did not attend it, his three Hebrew friends, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were there.
The large crowd gathered before the statue. Then the king’s messenger called out, “When you hear the music, all of you must kneel down and worship the golden image. Anyone who refuses to bow will be thrown into the fiery furnace.”
The music was played and everyone knelt—all but three young men. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stood tall even though their lives were at stake. Immediately some jealous Chaldeans reported them to the king.
Nebuchadnezzar was angry with them. “Is it true,” he asked, “that you refuse to worship my golden image? I will give you one more chance, and if you obey, fine. But if you still refuse to worship my image, you will be thrown into the fiery furnace.” Then he sneered, “And whose god will deliver you out of my hand?”
The three Hebrew boys had decided long ago what they would do. “We will not worship your image,” they answered. “Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us!”
The king’s face flushed with rage. “Tie those Hebrews,” he roared, “and throw them into the furnace. Make it seven times hotter than before!” Immediately his orders were obeyed.
As the king was gazing into the furnace, suddenly he cried out, “I see four men walking in the fire! The fourth one looks like the Son of God.” Then he called, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, come out!”
Calmly the young men stepped out of the furnace. Nebuchadnezzar and his servants stared at them in amazement. Though the ropes were gone, not one hair was singed or any clothing burned. They did not even smell of smoke.
Then the humbled king gave glory to the God of the Hebrews.
Daniel 1:1-7; 3
Caption: The Lord saves the three Hebrew boys from the fiery furnace.
Parents: Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. (Matthew 10:28)
Children: 1. How many men were put into the fiery furnace?
2. How many did the king see?
3. Who delivered the three Hebrew boys?
