NEW JERUSALEM—HEAVEN AND EARTH

Behold, I Make All Things New

John, called the disciple whom Jesus loved, lived to be an old man. Because he kept speaking about Jesus and preaching God’s Word, the cruel emperor of Rome banished him to a barren, rocky island called Patmos.

One morning, on the Lord’s day, John saw Jesus in a vision. Jesus told him, “Write in a book everything you see.” Then John saw the door of heaven itself opening. Inside someone was sitting on a throne encircled by a glowing rainbow. In His hand He held a book about the future. It was tightly sealed so no man could open it.

Then Jesus took the book. He was the only person both able and worthy to open the seals. Immediately thousands upon thousands of angels and elders burst out singing, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and glory and blessing!”

Jesus opened the seals one by one. John saw new things happening each time, but God was always in control of the whole world. Satan, the enemy of God, had plunged the world into sin and suffering. But Jesus defeated him for good when He died and rose again.

John heard Jesus say, “Behold, I make all things new.” Then a new heaven and a new earth appeared, perfect, lovely and good. Immediately the holy city, the New Jerusalem, came out of heaven as beautiful as a bride at her wedding.

John heard a voice saying, “God’s home is with mankind, and He will be with them. God will wipe away all tears. He will make an end of the sea and of the night. There will be no more sorrow, crying, pain, or death.”

No more sea means no more separation, restlessness, or turmoil like the ocean waves.

No more night means no blindness, darkness, shadows, or nightmares.

No more sorrow means no troubles, disasters, sadness, threats, or trials.

No more crying means no anguish, distress, heartaches, or grief.

No more pain means no aches, misery, suffering, exhaustion, or torture.

No more death means no disease, decay, accidents, or loneliness.

John wrote, “Blessed are those who obey God’s commandments, that they may enter in through the gates into the city.”

“I am coming soon,” said Jesus.

John answered for all believers. “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!”

PAUL AND SILAS IN PRISON

Singing in the Night

As the churches grew, the believers spread out farther from Jerusalem. Diligent missionaries were fulfilling Jesus’ commission to take the gospel to the whole world.

Paul and Silas traveled far away to Philippi in northern Greece. There they taught some people who often gathered beside a river to pray.

One day Paul and Silas met a slave girl who brought her masters much money by fortune-telling. It grieved Paul’s heart to know that an evil spirit was working through her. So he told the evil spirit, “I command thee in the name of Jesus to come out of her.” At once the spirit left her.

Now the girl’s owners were angry because their source of easy money was gone. They seized Paul and Silas and dragged them to the judge. “These men are Jews,” they cried. “They’re stirring up trouble by teaching customs contrary to Roman laws.”

Soon a mob joined the attack. Paul and Silas were whipped publicly and thrown into the innermost dungeon of the prison.

Paul and Silas were peaceful and happy in spite of their painful bruises and bleeding backs. At midnight they prayed and sang praises to the Lord. Never before had the other prisoners heard anything like this.

Suddenly a violent earthquake shook the prison to its very foundation. Doors flew open and the chains of every prisoner fell off! Truly God was answering prayer. The jailor woke up and saw the open doors. He was terrified, thinking the prisoners had escaped. Surely he would be blamed for carelessness. In despair he drew his sword to kill himself.

Then Paul called out, “Don’t harm yourself, for we are all here!” The jailor called for a light. He fell down before Paul and Silas, trembling. “What must I do to be saved?” he asked.

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, then you and your household will be saved,” they replied.

What a night it was for the jailor and his family! After tending to the wounds of Paul and Silas, the whole family was baptized. Then a delicious meal was served with everyone rejoicing in their new faith in the Lord Jesus.

PETER IN PRISON

Freed by an Angel

All over Palestine, more and more people were becoming believers. The persecution had stopped for awhile and the churches were enjoying peace.

Then King Herod found out that the Jewish leaders liked him better when he mistreated the believers. He was especially popular for killing the apostle James with the sword. So the king singled out Peter as his next victim. On the first day of the Passover feast, Peter was arrested and put into prison. The king planned to wait until after the seven-day festival for his public trial.

During this whole week the disciples prayed day and night for Peter. Finally it was the last night, just before he was to die. Would God deliver him?

Inside the prison, four soldiers guarded Peter day and night. He was double-chained between two soldiers while the other two guarded the gates. There Peter slept as peacefully as a child.

Suddenly an angel stood beside him in a beam of glorious light. He tapped Peter’s side and said, “Get up quickly!” The heavy chains dropped away. “Now put on your clothes and shoes, then follow me,” said the angel.

Peter obeyed, thinking he was dreaming. They walked past the first guard, then the second one. Finally they reached the heavy iron gate which led to the city. It mysteriously opened by itself! The angel walked the length of one street with Peter, then he disappeared.

At last Peter realized what had happened. It’s really true! he thought. The angel of the Lord has rescued me from my enemies!

Then Peter went straight to the prayer meeting and knocked on the gate. A girl named Rhoda went to see who was there and immediately recognized his voice. Instead of opening the door, she ran to tell the good news to the others.

“You must be mad,” the people said flatly.

“No, I’m not,” Rhoda declared. “It really is Peter!”

“It is his angel,” they insisted.

Peter kept knocking until they opened the door. How amazed they were to see him! They rejoiced to know that God truly does hear the prayers of His people.
