JESUS CLEANSES THE TEMPLE

God’s House Is Sacred

At the time of the yearly Passover feast, Jesus went to Jerusalem. Three years earlier when He had attended the Passover feast, He had been very sad by the lack of respect for God’s temple. With a braided rope whip, He had driven out the merchants and moneychangers. He had unloosed the cattle, sheep, and doves.

Now this year the merchants were all back again, busy as ever. God’s holy house looked like a market and smelled like a barnyard. How could anyone worship God in such a place? Jesus knew He must bear witness against this disgrace.

So Jesus again drove out all the merchants and upset the tables of the moneychangers. He cleared away the seats of those who had been selling doves. He did not let anyone carry any kind of bowl or pitcher through the temple. Then Jesus explained, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer.’ But you have made it a den of thieves!”

The Jewish leaders had made a rule that no lame or blind person could enter the temple. They said that only those with perfect bodies should come before the Lord. They forgot that God looks at the heart of a person more than at his body. So Jesus welcomed the lame and blind people into the temple and healed them all!

Soon the children saw Jesus doing good deeds in the temple. These innocent little ones always loved Jesus. They cried out over and over, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” (implying: God help the Messiah). What a day it was! Never before had anything like this happened in the temple. Never would it happen again.

The priests and elders should have rejoiced to see so many happy people. Instead, they were very angry.

Jesus asked them, “Have you never read in the Psalms, ‘Out of the mouth of children, even infants, you have perfect praise’?”

A MOUNTAINTOP EXPERIENCE

Moses and Elijah Appear With Jesus

One day Jesus told His disciples that He would soon suffer much pain. The chief priests and scribes would treat Him cruelly in Jerusalem and even kill Him. But on the third day after His burial, He would come back to life.

Jesus also instructed His disciples to be faithful, and to never be ashamed of Him. They should not live selfishly, but do good to everyone. Then Jesus promised that before they died, some of them would see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.

These teachings were new to the disciples. They could not understand that Jesus had come into the world to suffer and die. Instead, they had been planning to reign with Jesus in an earthly kingdom. Now they felt greatly troubled by His words.

About one week later Jesus took Peter, James, and John up on a high mountain. The tired disciples soon fell asleep. Meanwhile as Jesus was praying, a glorious change came over Him. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became a dazzling white. Then Moses and Elijah appeared from heaven and talked with Him.

The disciples awoke with a start. What had happened to Jesus? They cowered in fear before the three brilliant beings. Somehow the disciples knew that the two from heaven were Moses and Elijah.

Soon Moses and Elijah vanished. Then a bright cloud covered Jesus and His disciples. A voice spoke from the cloud saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him.”

Jesus had planned this glorious meeting both for His three disciples and for all future believers. It was a foretaste of the glory that will be His when He returns to earth. Then all His redeemed saints will be with Him. All those who have died before His return will come back to life, like Moses did. Those who are still alive when He comes will be changed in the twinkling of an eye.

JESUS AND THE LITTLE CHILDREN

Who Is the Greatest in God’s Kingdom?

One day some parents brought their little children to see Jesus. Some mothers came with tiny babies in their arms. They wanted the Master to lay His hands on them and bless them. But they could not get His attention right away, for He was busy with the crowd. “Don’t bother the Master,” the disciples told them. “He is too busy for children.”

Jesus was displeased with His disciples. “Never turn children away!” He rebuked them. “My kingdom is made up of people who are trustful, loving, humble, and forgiving like children. Always let the children come to me.”

Then Jesus took the children in His arms one by one. He tenderly laid His hands on them and blessed them. The disciples looked on in wonder. The Master was giving a lot of attention to these little children.

Another time some of the disciples were arguing among themselves. Each one thought he was more important than the other. So they asked Jesus, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of God?”

Jesus promptly set a child in the middle of their circle. He declared, “Unless you have a change of heart and become like this little child, you will never enter my kingdom.”

A child does not try to be important and rich or to have great power and fame. He loves his parents, trusting them to take care of him. Whoever is humble, trusting his Heavenly Father like a child, is the greatest in God’s kingdom.

Jesus continued, “It would be better to have a stone tied to one’s neck and be drowned in the deep sea, than to lead a child away from me into sin.”

“Children have angels in heaven who watch over them,” said Jesus. “The kingdom of God is made of such little ones.”

QUIETING THE STORM

Peace in the Midst of Turmoil

It had been a long, tiring day for Jesus. He had been healing the sick and teaching the crowd at the lake shore since early morning. Now He longed for a quiet place to rest. So Jesus said to His disciples, “Let us cross the lake to the other side.”

But it was not easy to get away from the crowd. Everyone wanted to stay with Jesus just a little longer. Finally He and His disciples were able to set sail for the opposite shore of the lake. Some other boats also set off at the same time. No doubt they carried some people who were determined to follow Jesus wherever He went.

Soon Jesus was fast asleep on a pillow in the back of the boat. The disciples relaxed in the cool breeze as they sailed toward the land of Gadara. They watched the sun sliding beneath the horizon and the first few stars winking into view. It was a pleasant evening to be on the Sea of Galilee. There was no hint of the fierce storms that often engulfed the lake.

Then it happened. Black clouds swept down from the mountainside, turning the gentle breeze into an angry storm. The boat began pitching and tossing in the raging sea. Again and again huge waves smashed against it, sending great surges of water over the sides.

The disciples became frantic. More and more water poured into the boat. Even the seasoned fishermen, Peter, James, and John, started to panic.

At last the disciples began to look for Jesus. To their amazement He was still fast asleep. Quickly they awoke Him, crying, “Master, don’t you care if we die?”

“Where is your faith?” Jesus gently rebuked the disciples. “Why are you so fearful?”

Then Jesus arose and commanded, “Peace! Be still!” Immediately the wind and rain stopped and the lake became calm again.

The disciples were stunned. They asked, “Who is this man that can make the wind and the water obey Him?” Without a doubt, they knew that Jesus must be the Son of God.
