The Dai or Tai or Shan

The Dai - Only the living water will truly cleanse them

Although the sun had not yet risen, the village resounded to the barks of dogs and the cries of Children. His mother had already bathed and dressed young Sawat when Ailang plunged himself under the water. Like all the other Dai people, Ailang’s family was getting ready to attend the danfo service at the village Buddhist temple.

Ailang was allowed to carry the family offerings of money, rice, papayas and flowers. As his family offered incense, Ailang presented their offerings to the gilded statue of Buddha. Monks were chanting Buddhist scriptures, and devoted Dai lips silently murmured prayers. The first of light of the New Year pierced the incense clouds hanging in the temple.

Small children let out squeals of delight as Buddha’s statue glowed in the sunlight. Sever of the men moved forward, hoisted the statue onto strong bamboo poles and carried it into the courtyard. This was the signal the women had been waiting for. Along with the other village women, Mi Ailang showered Buddha with water. Their Water-Sprinkling Festival had began.

Before Mi Ailang could refill her basin, Ailang and Sawat, aided by their father, tossed water over their mother. Water drenched the courtyard as Dai Families Sprinkled water over anyone within range. Water, laughter and joy mark the beginning of every Dai New Year. The Dai believe that the water washes away the sins of the last year and carries with it any potential disasters from the year to come. The Water-Sprinkling Festival lasts several days with everyone getting drenched repeatedly. Mi Ailang saw to it that her children were sprinkled often and thoroughly; she wanted to ensure that last year’s sins wouldn’t follow Ailang and Sawat into the new year (read Hebrews 10:22).

Pray that:

-Dai families would came into relationship with the great high priest, Jesus Christ (Hebrews 4:14: 7:24)

-The Dai would understand they can sprinkle their bodies clean but not their hearts.

-Hebrews 10:19-22 would be proclaimed over the Dai, personalizing the verses for the Dai people.

-Entire Dai families would have the opportunity to hear about the One who alone can offer them living water (John 4:14; 7:38)
