GOD SPEAKS THROUGH JEREMIAH
A Warning Rejected
Once again the children of Israel were serving idols. God sent many prophets to them, but they ignored them and would not repent. Jeremiah was one of God’s prophets. Because he had preached against the people’s sin, they put him in prison.
Jeremiah could not go into the house of the Lord. So he sent for Baruch his secretary. Baruch was to write down the message that Jeremiah had received from the Lord. Jeremiah hoped the people would hear the prophecies, cry to God for mercy, and forsake their sinful ways.
Baruch wrote God’s message on a scroll. He read it in Jerusalem to a crowd who had gathered for a day of fasting. He read about terrible times ahead, when God would punish them for their sins. Jerusalem would be broken down. Their beautiful temple and their houses would be burned. The people would be marched away as slaves to a strange land.
Baruch also read this message of grace, “If you are sorry for your sin and start obeying God, these things will not happen.”
The princes of Judah were frightened when they heard God’s Word. They said, “The king must hear this message.” They told Baruch that he and the prophet should hide, while they read the scroll to King Jehoiakim.
The scroll was read to the king while he sat beside his fireplace. Every time three or four pages had been read, the king cut them out with his penknife and threw them into the fire. The princes begged him not to burn God’s Word, but he continued until all of the scroll was destroyed. He was not afraid of all the trouble that was coming. Instead, he was angry with Jeremiah and with Baruch. He sent his servants to seize them, but the Lord had hidden them.
Then the Lord commanded Jeremiah to write another scroll, adding even more curses. King Jehoiakim could burn Jeremiah’s scroll, but he could not destroy the Word of God. Likewise, men today can burn a Bible, but they can never destroy its message!
Jeremiah 36
Caption: King Jehoiakim angrily burns the pages of God’s message to His people.
Parents: And they shall know that I am the Lord, and that I have not said in vain that I would do this evil unto them. (Ezekiel 6:10)
Children: 1. Who told Jeremiah what to write?
2. How did the king destroy the scroll?
3. Why did the king hate Jeremiah?
