ISAIAH—GOD’S PROPHET
A Vision From Heaven
At a time of great trouble in Israel, God raised up Isaiah, one of the greatest prophets who ever lived. He wrote the Book of Isaiah, which is a part of the Bible. Isaiah has been called the prince of prophets because of his powerful descriptions of God’s justice and plan of redemption. The great prophecies of the coming Messiah, the Lord Jesus, are the crowning of his book.
If we remember that Isaiah lived at a time of wicked rulers, it will help us understand why he wrote as he did. Notice these words describing Israel: “Ah sinful nation, a people loaded with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters.”
He pronounced a woe, or curse, upon those who were corrupt. Some said evil was good, and good was evil. They called darkness light and light darkness. They accepted bribes to excuse criminals, but condemned the righteous.
Isaiah also wrote about himself and the vision he had. He saw the Lord sitting upon the throne of the universe, dressed in His royal robes. Above Him were heavenly beings with six wings. They were flying about and saying, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord.”
This vision helped Isaiah realize anew that God Himself was on the throne! We also need to be reminded again and again that God is still in control of this world. Earthly rulers rise and fall, but God reigns forever.
Having seen God in His holiness, Isaiah cried, “Woe is me! I am undone! I am a man of unclean lips.” Then a heavenly being touched Isaiah’s lips with a live coal, and said, “Now you are clean.”
Isaiah brought courage and hope to anyone who would obey the Lord. He promised that someday God would raise up a Deliverer. His name would be Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. He also wrote, “The ransomed of the Lord shall come with songs and everlasting joy. Sorrow and sighing shall flee away.” (Isaiah 35:10)
