BUILDING A TEMPLE FOR GOD
A Peaceful Project
The most important work during Solomon’s reign was building the house of God, called the temple. The site chosen for this beautiful building was in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah. His father, King David, had stored up much beautiful cedar wood, special stones, and fine linen for the temple.
King Solomon drafted more than one hundred eighty-three thousand men for this work. These included the stone-cutters who labored in the mountain quarries. Ten thousand men were sent to Lebanon every month to be woodcutters. Various tasks were assigned to the foreigners in Israel. Thirty-three hundred men were overseers of the work. Before each stone and board was brought to the temple site, it was cut to the right size. Each piece fit so perfectly that no hammer, saw, or other tool was needed in the temple during its construction. The great building rose quietly and peacefully.
Jesus likewise builds His church here on earth in a reverent and peaceable manner. He has made provision for us to be His living temple, a dwelling place for the Holy Spirit.
After seven years the magnificent temple was finished. Would God accept it? Would He honor it with His presence?
On the day planned for the temple dedication, King Solomon stood on a platform before the people. The people watched as he knelt down, reached out his arms toward heaven, and prayed earnestly for God’s blessing.
As Solomon finished his prayer, fire fell from heaven and consumed the sacrifice they had offered. The glory of God filled the temple, showing clearly that God was pleased. The people bowed on the pavement, worshiping and praising the Lord, saying, “He is good; for His mercy endureth forever.”

Parents: I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord. (Psalm 122:1)
Children: 1. What did they call this beautiful building that Solomon built?
2. How many years did it take to build the temple?
3. What did Solomon and the people do when it was completed?
