JERICHO
City Conquered Without a Battle
After the two spies had come back from Jericho to the camp of Israel, Joshua commanded the people to take down their tents and roll them up. He said, “Gather your flocks and cattle, and be ready to march.”
When Joshua gave the order, first the priests then the rest of the people marched toward the Jordan River. The river was extra high and swift during this time of the year.
Joshua said to the priests, “Now step into the water.” A wonderful thing happened. As soon as the priests’ feet touched the water, the river stopped flowing. Upstream the water piled up and downstream it flowed away, leaving a great dry place for the people to walk through.
At last the children of Israel were safe in the land God had promised them more than five hundred years before.
Then the Lord told Joshua how to conquer the city of Jericho. The Israelite army marched around the thick, high walls of Jericho once every day for six days.
On the seventh day, they got up very early in the morning. This day they kept marching until they had circled the city seven times. As they passed one window, they saw a scarlet cord. They knew this was the house of Rahab who had saved the lives of the two spies.
When the seventh march ended, they all stood still. There was silence for a moment, then the priests blew their trumpets. Joshua’s voice rang out, “Shout, for the Lord has given you the city!”
The Israelites gave a thunderous shout. They watched as the walls trembled, crumbled, and fell!
God had given them the city of Jericho. Rahab with her family was saved and blessed because she had faith in the God of Israel.
