AN ARMY FOR GIDEON
Three Hundred Chosen Conquerors
Gideon was a man of faith. He wanted to be sure God was leading him, so he prayed for God’s special guidance to fight the Midianites. The Lord said to Gideon, “Your army is too large. Send home all those who are fearful.” When Gideon told the Israelites this, twenty-two thousand men went away, leaving only ten thousand.
But the Lord said to Gideon, “There are still too many people. Bring the soldiers down to the water where I will show you how to find the men you need.”
As the men came to the water, Gideon watched how they drank. Most of the men knelt down to drink. But some did not stop to take a long drink of water. Instead, they caught up the water and lapped it from their hands.
God said to Gideon, “Set the men apart who lapped the water from their hands. I have chosen these three hundred men to set Israel free. They are watchful men ready to meet the enemy.”
Gideon saw the Midianites spread out through the valley like hordes of grasshoppers. He waited until it was night. Then he gave each man a trumpet and a pitcher with a lighted lamp inside.
Gideon told all the men to shout, “The sword of the Lord and of Gideon.” They blew the trumpets and shouted and broke the pitchers in their hands.
The Midianites awoke to find lights all around them. In great terror they began to flee, running into each other in their panic.
So Gideon with his three hundred men gained a miraculous victory.
Judges 7
Caption: The Lord shows Gideon which men to choose for his army.
Parents: It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. (Psalm 118:8)
Children: 1. How many men did Gideon need to gain the victory?
2. How did Gideon know which men to use?
3. What did the army do after they blew the trumpets?
