JESUS IS CONDEMNED

An Unfair Trial

The plot to capture Jesus had been successful. The mob brought Jesus before the two Jewish leaders, Annas and Caiaphas. He stood alone and friendless, surrounded by accusing priests and Pharisees. How they hated Him! Somehow He always made their proud, make-believe goodness look so cheap and unclean. Now they could finally get rid of Him.

Though Jesus was very tired, the men did not let Him rest. They spit in His face. They blindfolded Him, then struck Him with their hands. “Tell us who hit you!” they jeered.

During this time Peter was warming himself at a fire nearby. First one bystander, then another declared that Peter was a follower of Jesus. Both times Peter denied it. The third time they accused him, Peter became angry. Cursing and swearing, he shouted, “I don’t even know the man!”

Just then a rooster crowed. Jesus looked straight at Peter. In a flash, Peter remembered that Jesus had said, “Before the rooster crows two times, you will deny me three times.” Peter felt terrible! Overcome with remorse, he went out and wept bitterly.

When Judas saw that Jesus was being condemned, he felt more and more miserable. How could he have been so wicked? He went back to the temple to see the priests. “I am guilty of betraying an innocent man,” he confessed.

“That’s your problem,” they replied coldly.

With a cry of despair Judas flung the thirty silver coins across the floor. Then he went out and hanged himself.

As a new day dawned, the whole Jewish council took Jesus to the court of Pilate the governor. “This man is a trouble-maker,” they accused. “He tells the people not to pay taxes to the Roman government. He even claims to be a king!” More voices chimed in, shouting all kinds of slander.

Pilate could soon tell that the Jews had brought Jesus because they were jealous of Him. He questioned Jesus carefully, but found Him innocent of any crime. In fact Jesus seemed far more honorable than the Jewish council.

But what could Pilate do? The crowd was becoming louder and wilder every minute. “Crucify Him!” they roared. “Put Him to death!”

A NIGHT IN GETHSEMANE

A Kiss of Betrayal

Jesus and His disciples crossed the brook Kidron into the Garden of Gethsemane. They were all very tired. “Please stay close to me,” He said to Peter, James, and John. “My heart is very heavy.” Then Jesus walked a little farther and fell to the ground. He was almost overwhelmed with grief. “My Father,” He prayed earnestly, “would you to take away this terrible suffering that I face? Yet I will accept whatever you want for me.”

An angel came from heaven to strengthen Him. Jesus was in such agony that bloody sweat dripped from His face.

At this time when Jesus needed His disciples the most, they were fast asleep. Twice Jesus woke them, but they soon dozed off again. The third time, Jesus said, “Couldn’t you stay awake with me for even one hour? Now you must get up. A mob is coming to arrest me!”

Suddenly the disciples heard the clattering of metal and the thudding of many marching feet. They saw swords glinting in the light of flickering lanterns and torches. The band of Jewish priests, soldiers, and elders was coming right toward them. To the disciples’ horror, they saw that Judas was leading the mob!

Judas walked up to Jesus and kissed Him. What a mockery of friendship! But Jesus calmly asked, “Do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?”

Then Jesus asked the mob, “Who are you looking for?”

“Jesus of Nazareth!” they exclaimed.

Jesus answered, “I am He.” As He spoke they all fell backwards to the ground. Jesus did not try to escape. He only asked them not to arrest His disciples.

“Shall we use the sword?” the disciples asked. Swiftly Peter’s sword flashed out, cutting off the right ear of the high priest’s servant.

“Put away your sword,” said Jesus. “Those who use the sword will die by the sword.” He gently put the ear back in place and healed it. In this last miracle before He suffered for all mankind, He showed His love for His enemies.

Farewell Prayer of Jesus

After the last supper, Jesus talked to His disciples for a long time. He wanted to prepare them for the difficult days ahead. “You must trust and believe in me, just as you believe in God,” He said. “I am going to leave you soon. But after I have risen from the dead, we shall meet again. Do not be overcome by fear or despair, even when it seems everything has gone wrong.”

Jesus continued, “When I return to my Father, I promise not to leave you alone. My Father will send the Holy Spirit to comfort you. Although you will not be able to see Him, He will guide you in the true way. He will help you remember the things I have taught you. He will also give you courage to obey my commandments.”

“I will prepare beautiful mansions for you in heaven,” said Jesus. “Then one day I will come again to take you there. You already know the way.”

But Thomas said, “Lord, we have no idea where you are going. How can we know the way?”

“I am the way to God,” answered Jesus. “I am the only bridge from man to God. No one can come to God except across that bridge.”

Jesus said lovingly, “Before I leave you, I will give you the gift of peace—My Peace. It is not the world’s kind of peace. My peace will keep you strong and joyful even during hard times.”

Then Jesus prayed a most beautiful prayer. Lifting His eyes to heaven, He said, “Holy Father, I have told these disciples all about you. Keep them safe from Satan’s power. Make them pure and holy through your truth. I pray not only for these with me, but also for all those who will believe in me from this time until the end of the world.”

After Jesus finished talking to His disciples, they went out into the night. They crossed the brook Kidron and entered the garden of Gethsemane.

THE LAST SUPPER

Symbols of Jesus’ Suffering

Jesus wanted a quiet, safe place to enjoy His last Passover feast with the disciples. He told Peter and John, “Go into Jerusalem and look for a man carrying a pitcher of water. Follow him to his house, and he will show you a large room upstairs. There you may prepare our Passover meal.”

Meanwhile Judas, one of the disciples, had secretly gone to the chief priests. He asked them, “How much money will you give me if I deliver Jesus unto you?” The chief priests were delighted to hear this from one of Jesus’ own followers. They promised to give Judas thirty silver coins.

When the Passover feast was ready, Jesus and His disciples sat down at the table. “I have been looking forward to this hour with deep longing,” said Jesus. “I want to eat this Passover meal with you once more before I suffer.”

Although Jesus loved to be with the disciples, His heart was heavy that evening. During the meal He said, “One of you is going to betray me to my enemies.” Shocked and grieved, the disciples looked at each other.

One by one they asked Jesus, “Am I the one?”

Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I give this bread after I have dipped it in the sauce.” As He spoke He gave it to Judas Iscariot. “Do quickly what you are going to do.” Then Judas went out into the night as dark as his heart. He could hardly wait to get his hands on all those shining coins.

That evening Jesus changed the old Jewish Passover into the new Lord’s Supper. He took a loaf of bread and after giving thanks, He handed the pieces to His disciples. “Eat this bread, for it stands for my body.” Next Jesus took a cup of wine. He said, “Drink this, because it stands for my blood, which will be shed for the sins of many. I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it with you in my Father’s kingdom. In the future, keep the Lord’s Supper to remember my suffering and death.”

As the farewell supper ended, the disciples sang a hymn with their Lord Jesus for the last time.
