JESUS AND THE SAMARITAN WOMAN
Revival in Samaria
The noonday sun beat down on Jesus as He rested by Jacob’s well, near the town of Sychar in Samaria. He was waiting for the disciples who had gone to buy food.
Soon a woman came to draw water from the well. When Jesus asked her for a drink, she was amazed. She could tell that Jesus was a Jew. A Jewish man did not usually speak to a Samaritan—especially not a woman! “You mean you want water from me, even though I am a Samaritan?” she asked. Who was this strange man?
Jesus replied, “If you knew what a wonderful gift God can give you, and who I am, you would ask me for living water!” He went on, “People soon become thirsty after drinking from this well. But whoever drinks the living water that I give, will not become thirsty again. It becomes a well that keeps bubbling into everlasting life.”
The woman answered, “Sir, give me that water! Then I’ll never be thirsty again, and I won’t need to walk out here every day.”
Jesus began to prick her conscience. “Go home and bring your husband.”
“But I’m not married,” replied the woman.
“I know,” Jesus said kindly. “You have had five husbands, and you’re not even married to the man you live with now!”
Astonished, the woman said, “Sir, you must be a prophet. I have many questions. But I know that when Christ the Messiah will come, He will explain everything.”
Jesus answered, “I am the Messiah.”
Immediately the woman raced toward the village, leaving her water pot behind. “Come see a man who told me all I ever did,” she cried. “He must be the Messiah!”
Soon a crowd of curious Samaritans followed the woman back to Jacob’s well. “Please stay with us a few days,” they begged Jesus. “Tell us more about the good news you have brought.”
So Jesus stayed at Sychar for two days, and many people believed on Him.
